How to write a caption and why captions are important

According to Oxford Languages, captions are "a title or brief explanation appended to an article, illustration, cartoon, or poster". There are multiple ways to write captions, but the main two are expanded and basic captions. Basic captions have an action lead in, are in present tense, identify 5 people, describe action in photo, and give who, what, where and when of photo/article. Expanded captions have an action lead in, identify 5 people, describe action in photo, and give who, what, where and when of photo/article. Their first sentence is present tense and the rest is in past tense.
